Ontario Arborist and Forester Named “True Professional” by International Society of Arboriculture

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (August 2013) – James McCready, a program forester with Tree Canada and owner of McCready Tree & Forestry Consulting in Carleton Place, Ontario, has been named a “True Professional of Arboriculture” by ISA for 2013.

The True Professional recognition program honors arborists and tree care professionals for their positive impact on the industry in and around their communities and the world. ISA President Terrence Flanagan honored McCready at a ceremony on Monday, August 5th in Toronto, as part of the ISA Annual Conference and Trade Show, August 3rd—7th, 2013.

“McCready promotes ISA’s best practices for urban trees and urban forestry across the landscape,” says Flanagan. “Even in his retirement, McCready is not slowing down. He encourages the growth of healthy trees across Eastern Ontario, fosters tree planting projects with Tree Canada, and drives the development of the Regional Forest Health Network.”

After nearly 30 years with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, McCready now regularly volunteers his expertise as a registered professional forester and ISA Certified Arborist. McCready is known as the “Town Arborist” in Carleton Place, offering free consultation because there is no city funding to pay staff for the proper care of urban trees.

“This recognition from an international organization has taken awhile to sink in,” says McCready. “ISA stands for the promotion of good arboriculture practices for urban trees and urban forestry. I try to carry out the ISA message by working with groups and individuals who have a love of trees, but lack the knowledge to care for them.”

McCready is one of five individuals selected in the 2013 Class of True Professionals. ISA launched the recognition program in 2009 to increase public understanding of arboriculture and the professional skills of today’s arborists. Nominees selected for recognition represent various backgrounds as ISA Certified Arborists, urban foresters, authors, and business owners—all advancing the cause of the industry.

This year’s ISA “True Professionals” judges included John Ball (professor of forestry at South Dakota State University, Brookings, S.D.), SK Ganesan (deputy director of landscaping and arboriculture, National Parks Board, Singapore), Alan Jones (vice president and division manager, Bartlett Tree Experts, Afton, Va.), Lauren Lanphear (president, Forest City Tree Protection, South Euclid, Ohio and 2011 ISA “Award of Distinction” winner), Randy Lidkea (retired arborist, ISA committee member, St. Thomas, Ontario), Paul Revell (urban and community forestry manager, Virginia Department of Forestry, Charlottesville, Va.), Rip Tompkins (arborist and principal at ArborMaster, Willington, Conn.), and Philip van Wassenaer (president, Urban Forest Innovations, Inc., Mississauga, Ontario and 2009 ISA “True Professional of Arboriculture”).

Our mission is to enhance and promote the care and benefit of trees for present and future generations in Ontario through education, research and awareness.
