GO BIG OR STAY HOME! Mark your calendars now for ISA Ontario’s Annual Educational Conference & Trade Show Wednesday, February 15 to Friday, February 17, 2012. We will be hosted at the Ambassador Conference and Resort Hotel in the beautiful and historic City of Kingston.

On the heels of recent successes in Niagara Falls and London, Ontario, we are in full swing planning Conference 2012: Go Big or Stay Home. We are working hard on targeting many aspects of the arboriculture industry including big news, big trees and big equipment.

Our first big news to share with you is that we have secured Dr. Ed Gilman from the University of Florida to be our keynote speaker. Ed successfully captivated our 2008 conference audience on corrective tree pruning all the way from his office in Florida. If stormy snowy weather stays at bay this February, we will finally have Dr. Ed Gilman here in person!

For those of you who have not met or seen Ed speak, he conducts research and educational programs in tree selection, urban design, nursery production and urban tree management. Dr. Gilman was a recent (and popular) guest speaker at the 2010 Canadian Urban Forest Conference in Truro, Nova Scotia. For more information on Dr. Gilman’s research, please visit the University of Florida Landscape Plants website

We have also secured Dr. Dirk Dujesiefken from the Institute of Arboriculture in Hamburg, Germany, to speak to his work with the CODIT Principle, his research on wound reactions in trees, and the influence of seasonality on tree wounding. To build on the topics of tree biology, storm response and tree pruning, Bill Gardiner from Gardiner Tree Trimming and Removal Limited will engage us in the use and operations of cranes around trees, and Jonathan Arnold from Shady Lane Expert Tree Care will review his methods and successes in large tree moving. Other great topics we are looking to bring to you include the way trees react to light, rules and regulations around the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 and sessions on business and good business sense.

As always, the more the merrier. If you would like to volunteer at this year’s conference, or have any topics or great speakers you would like to have at future ISAO events, feel free to contact me via the ISAO office (subject line: Attention Heidi Breen).
