IPM FOR WOODY PLANTS is a field course designed to give you an opportunity to develop hands-on diagnostic skills and utilize valuable resources as a first step in IPM of woody plant pests. This popular workshop will have a small classroom component and combines field study and sample collection, lecture and hands-on diagnostics to help you detect and identify plant problems more effectively. CEU’s are available.

This Integrated Pest Management workshop will be held in partnership between Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), ISA Ontario and the Royal Botanic Gardens.   Keynote lecturers include Jen Llewellyn, OMAFRA Nursery & Landscape Specialist with Jon Peter, the Curator & Manager of Plant Records at the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Oak Wilt Identification and Management Qualification Course

The Arboriculture Society of Michigan (ASM), the ISA Michigan Chapter, is holding a private oak wilt qualification course for Canadian tree care professionals.

Oak wilt is a complex and relentless fungal disease that will continue to advance across our landscape unless identified, treated, and stopped. While there is general awareness of oak wilt in Michigan and other states near Canada, there is some confusion and misunderstanding of this complex disease and how to manage it. To advance knowledge of responsible, effective disease prevention measures and treatments, with the ultimate goal of eliminating the disease, the Arboriculture Society of Michigan (ASM) has developed the Oak Wilt Qualification program. Targeted for Qualification are arborists, foresters and other tree professionals dedicated to oak wilt management and eradication through education and application of industry best practices.

Apply to become an Oak Wilt Qualified specialist! This 2 day course with test is designed for those green industry professionals that want to learn more about oak wilt, it's fungus, prevention and management and best practices over all land types. Classroom and hands-on training are abundant in this workshop.

Prerequisites for the Course: You must hold an Certified Arborist and/or Registered Professional Forester, or a 4 year degree in a related field. Proof of credential or 4 year degree must be sent to ASM before your application can be accepted.

Please note:
·        Your application will be reviewed for consideration. If you meet the prerequisites you will receive communication from ASM that you are confirmed for the workshop.
·        A second class will be offered on July 18-19, only if the first class gets filled. Class size is 25.

Agenda:
·        Day 1 – In class education at Ojibway Nature Centre, Windsor
·        Day 2 – Outside Field education (hands-on) in Michigan, and Test in Windsor
o   Transportation provided from Ojibway Nature Center to Michigan and back to the Nature Center for the test in the afternoon.

You are responsible for your own overnight accomodation.

Have you ever found an insect and had no idea what it was? Was it a predator, a beneficial species, or perhaps a new invasive pest? Take part in a NEW 2-day workshop filled with interactive activities designed to sharpen your scouting, identification and management skills for pests and beneficial insects of trees and shrubs. The workshop will take place in the tranquil, natural learning environment of the Queens University Biological Research Station (just north of Kingston). Registration includes 2 nights accommodation and all meals.

Motivated by their contagious passion for learning, Marvin Gunderman, Dave Cheung and Jen Llewellyn will lead the workshop in an inspiring, engaging, teambuilding style filled with humour and fun.   CEU’s will be available.

Marvin Gunderman has worked at McMaster University in Hamilton for 28 years, where he combines his love for teaching entomology with his role as Manager of Technical Services.  Marvin has taught the Insect Taxonomy/Ecology for the Ontario Universities Program in field Biology (OUPFB) at the Queen’s University Biological Station near Elgin for 24 years. He also teaches insect modules at home and abroad (Honduras, 2009 and Costa Rica, 2010) and lectures and runs tutorials about insects in several undergraduate courses at McMaster University.

As a child, Dave Cheung spent most of his days rigging up electronics in unforeseeable ways and chasing insects with a net. He now blends his passions of entomology, technology, and education. Dave has worked as a collection manager at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and has experience teaching numerous entomology courses including, the University of Guelph, University of Copenhagen, Ontario Universities Program in Field Biology and Niagara College. Dave is now focused on building DKB Digital Designs which is dedicated to developing educational software such as Bugdex and BugFinder.

Jen Llewellyn is the Provincial Nursery and Landscape Specialist with OMAFRA and has been for over 18 years. She holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Horticulture from the University of Guelph and is also a Certified Arborist.   Jen has the privilege of working closely with the nursery, landscape and arboriculture sectors to troubleshoot all kinds of issues with the production and maintenance of woody and herbaceous ornamental plants.
