ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE
Calling on all Commercial Arborists in the GTA
Return to Arborist Archives...
Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) has been found in the border of the City of Toronto and the City of Vaughan. We have all heard about this pest and the devastation it can cause. Now that ALB has been identified in southern Ontario, there is an immediate need to know how far it has spread though the GTA.
Municipalities have already deployed manpower to look for evidence but I think that commercial arborists can help out with this enormous task as well. Hopefully we can eradicate this pest or at least contain it if we know where it is located.
As commercial arborists we, and I mean the sales people, see a large number of properties during the course of a week. It would be very easy for us to look for evidence of ALB while we are on the property and to report our findings. In addition, our crews, since they get a lot more up close and friendly with the trees, can report findings to their employers.
At this time, OCAA is working with the City of Toronto to form a plan as to how this will work. CFIA will provide us with training for identifying the signs of ALB. We should have this entire process in place before winter.
Please participate in this important initiative it is in all of our best interests to do so. At the moment, you may think: "well this is a boom to the arboriculture economy." But think about it, once all the valuable trees are gone from our clients properties, there is very little for us to do but wait for the trees we have had to plant to grow up so that we can start to climb again.
Anyone with questions or wishing to help with this please contact the ISAO office, 1-888-463-2316.
John Van Ekeren, OCAA President.
