The ISA Certified Tree Worker/Climber Specialist Examination is made up of two parts. A 50 question multiple choice knowledge exam and a skills exam. You must pass both parts to obtain the certification credential. Each part is explained in detail in this booklet (pdf/18pgs/90KB). The knowledge portion can be taken at any time the ISA Certified Arborist exam is held, provided it is taken before the day of the skills exam. The knowledge exam can also be taken on the same day as the skills exam during designated Tree Worker exams. You will need to specify on your application that you are taking the entire exam or which part of the exam you wish to take. Retakes can be taken after you have completed the knowledge and skills test for the first time.

Tree Worker/Climber Certification will prepare you in the following areas: safety 14%, removal 14%, rigging 14%, pruning 20%, cabling 6%, climbing/knots 14%, tree sciences 8% and tree identification 10%.

Tree Worker/Climber Certification will prepare you in the following areas: electric utility pruning 25%, vegetation management 30%, electrical knowledge 25%, customer relations 15% and emergency management 5%.

ISA Certified Municipal Specialist

This certification is also for professional arborists who are ISA Certified Arborists in good standing and have additional experience in the specialty area of urban trees. The municipal specialists work for cities and states, parks, contractors or consultants. One of the certification objectives is to provide the public and those in government with a means to identify those professionals who have demonstrated, through a professionally developed exam and education program, that they have a thorough knowledge of establishing and maintaining trees in a community.

ISA Board Certified Master Arborist
(application pdf/27pgs/335KB)

This credential is designed for arborists who have reached the pinnacle of their profession. To sit for the exam, individuals must be a Certified Arborist in good standing and have obtained other prerequisites, or "points" defined by ISA. A minimum of eight points are required, obtained through measurable experience, formal education, related credentials, or professional experience. The computer-based exam covers science, practice and management. Unlike our other certification programs, this test can be done online at any Sylvan Learning Centre or equivalent training facility.
