WHAT WILL YOU DO?
You will provide support on a variety of projects related to tree assessment and protection, natural area conservation, species recovery, and ecological restoration. Our Natural Sciences group works with a variety of public and private clients on a wide range of projects. You will have in‐depth training and experience as an Arborist and extensive knowledge of arboriculture. In support of the Team Lead and Group Manager, you will manage project resources and schedules, supervise and direct technical staff, and act as a trusted advisor to new and existing clients, ultimately meeting operational goals of team productivity, project profitability, and business development.

JOB DUTIES

  • Provide technical direction on a range of projects according to applicable regulations and guidelines
  • Prepare and coordinate Arborist reports, Tree Protection and Preservation Plans, and Restoration Tree Planting Plans
  • Collaborate with other technical staff and industry professionals as part of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Develop project plans, schedules, and allocation of personnel and resources.
  • Provide regular updates to clients and management and ensure delays or issues in project delivery are communicated effectively.
  • Develop project budgets, ensuring that costs are controlled and within approved limits; monitor expenditures and financial aspects of the project.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies and securing environmental permits and approvals.
  • Lead preparation of proposals and grant applications for prospective work.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols for self and support staff.
  • Providing mentorship and training to junior personnel, and day-to-day guidance consistent with overall goals for the project/service.
  • Working to meet internal and external deadlines, which may require occasional evening and weekend work.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a consulting arborist
  • Post secondary education in Arboriculture, Forestry, Horticulture, or B.Sc. or BES (minimum) in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline.
  • ISA Certified Arborist; ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
  • Advanced tree ID skills and understanding of tree health
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards for tree health assessment, preservation, and protection
  • Experience managing and providing technical leadership on arboriculture and other similar natural sciences projects.
  • Proven data compilation, data analysis, mapping, and technical writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with fluency (reading, writing, and oral) in English.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

  • Provincially recognized training/certification in the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) System or Ontario
  • Wetland Evaluation System (OWES).
  • Current First Aid and CPR-C certification
  • Project Management Certification or Training
  • Experience working on large-scale land development, infrastructure, and/or ecological monitoring projects.
  • Additional training/certification relating to ecological protocols or environmental monitoring (i.e., Butternut Health Assessor, Class 2 Backpack Electrofishing, OBBN, OSAP, Can-CISEC, etc.)
